"Trailed by a cluster of excellent reviews, The Diogenes Club seem well placed to take the summer dance circuits by storm. For some, that might not inspire cause to get overly excited. However, the 979 EP offers much more than a lot of the one-dimensional pap currently flooding dance floors. Tie Ourselves Around is a gently throbbing concoction of watery, de-intonated analog synth melodies, offbeat bass sweeps and linear drum machine groove. The less convincing I Could Try To Explain emerges in a slightly different vein. The track echoes aesthetics closer to late 80s / early 90s dance with harsher string sounds, characteristically swarmed by minor seventh chords. The recording concludes with the polyrhythmic Tete, a wonderfully charming interplay between piquant sine waves and ghostly sweeps, this time set against a more intricate groove. Without meaning to offend, the vocal presence in the tracks does not resonate in a way that always complements the mix, but perhaps the questionably heavy use of delay and reverb is responsible. Overall, The Diogenes Club have managed the incredibly difficult feat of creating dance music to listen to, and you bloody should… ST"
