David Borkmann: 'Mercury EP'

UT121
Released:  12th July

David Borkmann is a promising young producer from the West Coast of Sweden. David's sound is derived from many different influences. The rock and funk he played as a drummer in his former bands, the classical music he played on the piano as a child, and the deep house music that streamed from his DJing older brother's room. The 'Mercury EP' is his debut solo release, coming on the heels of his recent remixes of Eat More Cake, Avatars and The Berndt.

Matthias Vogt: 'The Way EP' Resident Advisor Review

"I loved Matthias Vogt's "Frankfurt Sour," which kicked off the RA Motorcitysoul podcast and ran for its entire ten-glorious-minute duration. Following barebones Detroit house tropes, all throbbing analogue components and a dystopian bleep riff which could...and did...go on forever, it might have been made ten years ago yet still sounded fresh. As a result, The Way came my way with serious baggage, and while it by no means lives up to its predecessor—what could?—it delivers enough punch over its varied tracks to be worth investigating."

Record Of The Day Featured Tracks: Relation 'Optimistic'

"First featured last year, Optimistic is taken from British duo Andrew Leary and Oliver Keech aka Relation's debut album 'Fear of Night'. As it gets a re-release and continues to pick up support, we still think this track (and the album as a whole) beats much of the currently touted electro pop, if only for putting substance before style. 'Warm and elegant electronic pop music' wrote Popjustice, where first single Your Tiny Mind was featured as Song of the Day. Moving electronic music with real heart which shouldn't be overlooked."

The Miniature Music Press - the Diogenes Club '979 EP'

"Trailed by a cluster of excellent reviews, The Diogenes Club seem well placed to take the summer dance circuits by storm. For some, that might not inspire cause to get overly excited. However, the 979 EP offers much more than a lot of the one-dimensional pap currently flooding dance floors. Tie Ourselves Around is a gently throbbing concoction of watery, de-intonated analog synth melodies, offbeat bass sweeps and linear drum machine groove. The less convincing I Could Try To Explain emerges in a slightly different vein. The track echoes aesthetics closer to late 80s / early 90s dance with harsher string sounds, characteristically swarmed by minor seventh chords. The recording concludes with the polyrhythmic Tete, a wonderfully charming interplay between piquant sine waves and ghostly sweeps, this time set against a more intricate groove. Without meaning to offend, the vocal presence in the tracks does not resonate in a way that always complements the mix, but perhaps the questionably heavy use of delay and reverb is responsible. Overall, The Diogenes Club have managed the incredibly difficult feat of creating dance music to listen to, and you bloody should… ST"
